Divorce and God’s Design

July 25, 2021

This sermon delves into 1 Corinthians 7, exploring biblical principles of marriage and divorce. It addresses the question of whether believers can divorce, especially in cases of mixed marriages, and examines the cultural and scriptural context of Paul’s instructions.

Transcript

If you will take your Bibles and turn to First Corinthians chapter 7, we are continuing our study in this book of First Corinthians. Last week we were looking at these first nine verses, and we talked about that issue of touching or not touching. The issue was actually whether it is right or wrong to have sex, to be involved in a sexual relationship at all, even in marriage. Because part of the issue coming out of Greek thought in the Corinthian church was that problem of thinking that all material things are evil. And so one way to deal with that was what you see in chapter 6, where people believing that the body is just something that disappears, it is destroyed, it does not matter at all, only the spirit is good. So whatever you do with the body is okay. That was one approach.

The other approach was exactly the opposite, which was, because the body is tainted in some way—which it is not, believe me. The whole point of Paul’s instruction here is to teach that marriage is honorable, that God created this material world himself and declared it good. All these things were to counter to the Greek kinds of thinking that had been absorbed in this Greek church in Corinth. And so, as they in chapter 7, Paul is beginning to deal with these questions. And so last week, we looked at the question about whether or not it is right for a man to ever touch a woman. Will it be holier if he never involved himself in that way?

And so that led to a complex discussion because there are certain situations in ministry where Paul says it is to the advantage to be single. You are freer in that such a case to sacrifice yourself for the Lord without having to be concerned or worry about not being able to please your wife or your family. And that is particularly true in the time of persecution. It is a very difficult thing in a time of persecution to stand faithful under the test, under the trial, and see your family members suffering, even suffering because they see you suffering or you seeing them actually tortured or put to death in front of you. It makes it a very complex situation in a time of trial and testing where the Christian church is being persecuted.

That was the situation in the first century. And so Paul is calling attention to those things. But he makes it perfectly clear that the ordinary God-given pattern is normally for husband and wives to marry. And the marriage bed is honorable and blessed. And so we need to be careful in preserving all that. So today we come to a separate question and all of these are difficult. I, when I come to a passage of Scripture, I try not to interpret it if I can help it. I appreciate your prayer very much. Because that is a prayer that I frequently pray every time we read from Scripture. That God keeps us faithful to what he says and that I not stray from it.

There are places where you have to choose, make a choice between two possibilities or more sometimes. And that is interpreting. But God only said one thing in his word. In each of these passages, there is only one true interpretation. So my prayer is that we will lead ourselves to that. At the same time, I am committed to the Lord to teach what it says, even if that becomes uncomfortable for me or I know it will become uncomfortable for other people. Keep that in mind, remember that God is very gracious. And he deals with us according to grace and mercy all the time. The question that we come to as we get to chapter, to verse 10, is, is it ever right for two Christians to divorce? That is the question. Two believers, is there ever a situation where it is okay or it is actually right for them to divorce?

That is the first question we look at this morning. So, with that in mind, let’s begin reading. I am going to begin reading at verse 10 and then read down through verse 16. This is God’s holy, inerrant word.

Divorce Among Believers

But to the married I give instructions, not I but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband. But if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband. And that the husband should not divorce his wife. But to the rest I say, not the Lord. That if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not divorce her. And the woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife. And the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband. Or otherwise your children are unclean. But now they are holy. Yet, if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave. The brother or sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace. For how do you know, oh wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, oh husband, whether you will save your wife?

Let’s ask the Lord to bless the reading of his word. Father, as we come to this passage today, we do pray, Father, that you will keep us to the truth and that you will apply this truth to our heart. We thank you, Father, for the rich grace that you give us in the Scripture, your provision. We also pray, Father, that your Scripture will correct us, that you will correct our hearts through it, and that you will sanctify us as we conform and are obedient to your will, as submitted to us in your word. We ask this in Christ’s name. Amen.

Now, one of the issues, topics of our day, is no-fault divorce, which we have, it has come about in the past couple of decades. Part of that, you could divorce, you could pursue a divorce legally in this country if you could demonstrate that your spouse had committed adultery, abandoned you or committed a felony, or something serious like that, that was grounds for divorce. But in recent times, we have what is called no-fault divorce. In modern times, the first place that this, the October Revolution in Russia, interestingly, little fact. That was because they regarded marriage as a bourgeois institution. And so the new government transferred divorce, the jurisdiction of divorce from the Orthodox Church to the state, which granted on application of either spouse. All you had to do to get a divorce is to apply for it, and you would get it. That was not true in the United States for many, many years. In fact, one state after another began to capitulate to this idea of no-fault divorce, making it really easy, making attractive arguments for it. And the last, the last state to hold out was New York. And New York changed the law to no-fault divorce in 2010. That late. One of the reasons that they were so late is because the women’s liberation movement was actively opposing no-fault divorce. Because they said, really often men are abusive in their relationship and then they pursue a divorce, and so they are not held accountable for their abuses.

It is kind of interesting how that all came about. But there are some pretty strong arguments that divorce should not be quite so easy. A paper published by the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, it was written by Douglas Allen. He is talking about, he said that the introduction, the introduction of no-fault divorce led to a six-fold increase in just two years after a century of relatively stable divorce rates. It also increased the rate at which women entered the workforce, increased the number of hours worked in a week, increased the so-called feminization of poverty, and increased the age at which people marry. So all those things are effects of our culture. And as no-fault divorce came about and as divorce increased and as marriage weakened legally, we have today many people who do not bother to get married at all. They do not pursue the marriage covenant at all. They live together in various relationships and they do not bother to marry. And so it is a pretty tragic decline culturally. But I am really not talking about culture. I am talking about our modern culture that we are living in, I am only slightly talking about the culture of the Corinthian church. I am talking about what God says about the relationship of marriage, the covenant of marriage that he instituted in man and woman.

So, the passage in the beginning of Malachi for our Old Testament reading, God hates divorce. And so we have this question, is it ever right for a Christian to divorce a spouse? Paul says in answer to that, to the married, I give instructions, not I but the Lord. If you were with us a few weeks ago, when we were looking at chapter 6, you might remember that the apostle calls attention to that Genesis passage which Jesus quoted, of God instituting marriage and the covenant of marriage. And so when Paul says, “I am not giving this instruction, the Lord is giving this instruction,” he is particularly talking about the Lord Jesus. And the teachings that Jesus gave concerning marriage and divorce and remarriage.

You might remember that in Matthew chapter 19, some Pharisees came to Jesus in order to test him, it says. And they said, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?” Which was the practice in first-century Jewish culture. First-century Jewish culture, a man could divorce his wife for any reason. It was virtually impossible for a wife to divorce her husband. It was exactly inequitable at that time. And the Lord points them back to creation, to Adam and Eve, and points them to God’s original purpose in marriage. And Jesus answered and said,

Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female and said, “For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.

And then they continued and they asked him, “Why then did Moses command to give her a certificate of divorce and send her away?” And Jesus said, “Because of your hardness of heart, Moses permitted you to divorce your wives. But from the beginning, it was not this way.”

There is something that you need to keep in mind in regard to that allowance that Moses gave and this instruction that the Lord Jesus gave in regard to the Old Testament law. And that is that the Old Testament law was the civil government of Israel. It was more than just, so in regard to that, the question is broader than asking the question that we have before us. Is it ever right for two believers, two Christians or two believers to divorce? In the Old Testament, you had a remnant of people who were true believers within Israel itself. And then you had the nation of Israel. And all the nation of Israel was under the theocratic control of God. It was under the government that God had prescribed through the law of Moses. And everyone in that culture was to be obedient to the laws. But not, they were not all regenerate. They were not all people of faith. They were not all part of the remnant that was always in Israel.

Hardness of Heart

And so because of that, because of a hardness of heart, a willful unbelief, a refusal to listen to God, a determination to go our own way no matter what he says, a word rejected, a heart hardened against God. Because they are not going to hear what God has to say in Genesis when he established the family. Because of the oppressive nature of sin, because it would bring such horrible unpeace in couples who were unregenerate, even Jewish with the blessings of the Jewish law, he allowed. It is really a difficult question. The unbelieving, adulterous Israelites who, you know, people who had a show of godliness and care for the word, and yet really often their hearts had hardened against the word of God. That is the passage in Malachi that we read. You know, if you were, if you were at a worship service and you observed these Israelites worshiping, you would think, these people are so incredibly devoted. Look at them crying out to God, bringing their offerings and their sacrifices. How close they must seem to the Lord. And yet that Malachi passage is making it really clear that these people’s hearts are far removed from God. They appear to love God in a powerful, great way, but their hearts are removed from him.

We had, I knew a lady from some years ago who was especially, she seemed especially pious, especially if you heard her pray. When she prayed, she prayed with such love for God. She prayed and she expressed her devotion to him. She was so sweet to him. And then when you get to Malachi, you begin to understand why she loves her God so much. It was because every willful thing that she wanted to do was the will of God. And you better not stand in the way of God or getting her way. Things like that do not show up exactly in a worship service or even in a prayer meeting. It shows up very clearly in the domestic life. We have to be careful of your heart. You have to be careful that the God you worship is not some adulterous concept where your heart is revealed because you are not willing to submit to the true God.

The true God, that was the case with Israel in so many ways. They would not, they would not submit to God’s direction for marriage or for a holy life. And so it made, in the civil government of Israel, divorce was something that was pretty much necessary. It is necessary in our society today for us. It is not something that is good, it is something that is necessary because of hardness of heart, because of evil, because of the way that people treat one another in marriage relationships. And in that same passage in Matthew 19, Jesus goes on to say and give an exception. He says, except for the case of fornication. He says, God puts people together in a relationship and there is no way that you break it except for fornication.

Another thing that I noticed is that passage after passage in commentaries and then books, cite that passage and they say, like in this one that has, talking about passages like the one we are looking at today, they talk about the adultery exception that Jesus mentions. So it is interesting when we come to First Corinthians 7:10 and he says, “But to the married, I give instructions, not I but the Lord. That the wife should not leave her husband.” And she goes on and says that, if that has already happened, it is a situation, she must not, she must not remarry. It is a separation. She has a choice, she can live a single life, her husband can live a single life, or the only other option is to reconcile. And there is no mention here of that exception that they call the adultery exception.

One of the things studying Matthew’s gospel, when we have found these exceptions, it happens in Matthew 5 and in Matthew 19. One of the problems with that is that the word that Jesus chose to use there is not adultery. It is the word fornication. And you would think that if he was talking about adultery, any sexual sin outside of marriage, if a man has an affair, if a woman has an affair, that is adultery. And the Bible uses adultery frequently to describe that circumstance. You would think he would use that word. Why did he not use that word? Why did he use the word fornication instead? Well, I think the reason is because it had to do with a particular situation that was true in Judaism in the first century. That is that in the, in a situation, when a person was betrothed to another person, remember the story of, of, of Joseph’s marriage to Mary? And, I mean, eventually the marriage to Mary ultimately, but the betrothal. Mary is betrothed to Joseph. And as a result of that, he, him finding out that she is pregnant. We read that in chapter 1, verse 19. And you can imagine how distraught he is. They are not married in the sense that we think about it, but there is a betrothal that has taken place. And because of her, him finding out that she is pregnant, he assumes that there has been fornication. And as a result of that, he determines to put her away privately. I think the King James puts it that way. Or he did not want to disgrace her. He plans to divorce her. Because in the first century, if you were betrothed in Israel, in order to break that betrothal, you had to have a legal divorce, a legal separation. It had to take place, it had to come about legally. So that is quite possible. In fact, I would say probably that Jesus has in mind when he is talking about fornication being the exception, the marriage has not been consummated. Fornication becomes evident. And so when that happens, there is that, that is the only reason for divorce. So that leaves us to this next question that we come to in this passage.

Marrying an Unbeliever

What do you do in the case where you have a believer who is married to an unbeliever? What about that situation? Paul begins this, “To the rest I say, and not the Lord.” By the way, when he says, “To the rest I say, and not the Lord,” he is not saying that in this passage I am not inspired by the Holy Spirit of God. He is not saying that I do not have authority for what I am about to say. He is simply saying the Lord Jesus, in his instruction on marriage, did not communicate anything about what we are about to discuss. That never came up. We do not have a saying in Jesus that describes that situation. A few years ago, I was counseling a person who was caught up in some pretty, pretty serious sin, and when I took a passage of Scripture from one of the epistles and applied that to him, I asked his response. He says, “Well, I do not, I do not give much credence to Paul.” After all, he says, “I, you know, it is just giving his opinion.” It was not even this passage. He called us back to this passage to say that, you know, it is just a matter of opinion. One of the things that happens to us when we are confronted with the word of God is that we begin to undermine what the word of God says. We do that by saying, you know, maybe that is not true or certainly that does not deal with me. I am certainly the exception to that general rule. And so the Scripture does not allow us to have that circumstance. We need to watch that because that is the heart of unbelief. That is the stony heart that is described, that is descriptive of the Jewish people who are not believers.

That is the word is in this passage, it is describing a person who is unbelieving, who is faithless. So, “to the rest I say, and not the Lord, that the brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not divorce her.” And the same is true for a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away. The problem of one unsaved and one saved partner in marriage is a little bit different. You know, in the Old Testament, there is a section in the Old Testament, right after Israel had returned from captivity. When they went into captivity, one of the great sins that led to captivity, the reason that God brought judgment upon them, and sent the Babylonians against the nation of Israel. So that Israel was captured, the temple was destroyed, they were dragged off, they were held captive in Babylon for 70 years, and finally released to go back to Israel. Why did God allow that to happen? One of the reasons was that Israel had begun to intermarry with unbelievers. And because they intermarried with unbelievers, the Israelites began to practice idolatry. And so, when Israel was able to go back into the land with Zerubbabel, with Nehemiah and Ezra, they are back in the land, they begin to build up the walls. One of the things that began to happen is that some of the men had unbelieving wives.

And so they recognized that as the sin that put them into captivity in the first place. And there was a very harsh command for them to put away their unbelieving wives, to divorce them. So in this case, if you are married to an unbeliever, would it be better that you just put away that person? Would you be holier if you did that? Well, Paul says, “No, not at all.” It is a very different situation. Here we are not talking about that sin, not the way. We are talking about, in the early church or today, you have a person who comes to faith, and your spouse does not come to faith. We have, among the Corinthians, we have many of these people coming out of adulterous backgrounds, and some of them become believers, but their whole family is not saved at the same time. It is a wonderful thing, you know, when the family, a person hears the Gospel like the Philippian jailer, and the Scripture says, “His whole household, were baptized, and the whole household were converted to faith.” It is a wonderful thing, but it is not always the way that it is. When Jesus talks about, you know, the fact that, you know, too often, the Gospel is not something that brings peace to a family, it causes division. A person, a person hears the Gospel, and God saves the one, but does not save the other. That is what Jesus is talking about in the Gospel. What he is saying is that, you know, too often, the Gospel is not something that brings peace to a family, it causes division.
